Helping us understand the costs of aged care homes is Justin Bott, the Financial Information Officer of Services Australia.

It’s a topic that many people find confusing, but Justin talks in simple terms about the money involved and where to get help. He also addresses wills, and how they are impacted when people head into aged care homes. Then there’s the sticky issue of what happens if assets have been given away and how that can affect ability to pay for care.

In Nostalgia Town, we meet a visionary – Ron McCallum AO. In 1993 he became the first totally blind person appointed to a full professorship at an Australian university. He served as Professor of Industrial Law at the University of Sydney and went on to become Dean of their Law School. Ron has been a leading light in the disabled community and chaired the United Nations Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.  In the interview with Lex and Patricia, he talks about growing up blind and explains the title of his memoir Born at the Right Time.

Costs of funerals come under scrutiny in Money Extra and we look at alternatives to the traditional arrangements which can put families under enormous financial pressure. Don from Bare Funerals & Cremations talks about available options.

Our Steppin’ Out guest is Brian Crabbe of 2RRR 88.5FM which broadcasts to the Sydney suburbs of Ryde and Hunters Hill. Brian presents There Goes That Song Again featuring music and artists of the 1940s, 50s and 60s. Brian talks about his interest in broadcasting history, the demise of 2CH, and his one-hour documentary on radio in the 1950s.
